Hello You Who Can Do A Melody A Week,
Don't you just know a great melody when you hear one?
You can feel it. It moves you deep inside your very being.
It's a sound you must hear. Again and again.
You love it. It's just so great!
But when you want to do a great melody too
you run into a big problem
Now that you want to a make a hit melody, you find you are right up against it.
The one who wrote your number one hit song is can not tell you how they did it.
They don't know how to.
But that is a small problem. It's not the big one.
The big problem you have is this
The big problem is that there is no good language of music that you can talk. With yourself or other people.
Not being able talk a common language when you want to make up a melody is a very big problem.
That has many levels.
How do you get around the big problem?
By using the language you already know: really simple english.
you can start like this.
Melody is made up of time and shape.
Melody are parts of time that move up and down in a way you like.
You also get round this big problem by making it into two different problems.
The two big problems you must control then are the problem of melody time and the problem of melody shape.
The first problem you have is this
The first problem that you must control is the problem of music time.
Many people call this the business of rhythm.
We will do better by calling this time parts and time words at this time.
There are also many levels to this problem.
You become very good making time lines made up of many time parts that work together when you control all these levels of music time.
To control each level of this problem will take you some time.
But it will not take for ever.
When you take your time to make it all work together, you will think that this has been easy all the time. Which, of course, it has.
And you are starting this easy work now.
The second problem you have is this
The second problem you must control is the problem of music notes.
Many people call this the business of pitch, notes, scales, chords and so on.
At this time it will be better to call these things by their simple names: sounds that go up or down or stay the same.
We can call this the shape problem.
And you will do that problem in another time when music time feels like it has always been really easy.
Your big problem in short
In short, your big problem is that melody is made up of the time problem and the shape problem.
Your first job is to control the time problem.
Your first work is to know each music time language.
There are seven of them. One for each music time.
The good news is that when you know the first one you already know most of the other six. This means you will not know only a small part of each language.
This means you will know these seven languages in a short time, at your own pace.
You will know each language and you will control each problem. And use them to make a good melody as often as you want.
And that success starts now when you know your first music time language.
Now that you know the problems, what do you need to know to make them work for you and not against you?
